Chania: West Crete between wild coasts, gorges and long drives

Chania is not one compact corner of Crete. Kissamos and Balos belong to a very different day from Paleochora, Sougia or Sfakia, with mountains, gorges and roads in between that make straight-line distance almost meaningless.

So we do not treat Chania as a checklist of famous beaches. The useful question is which coast fits your base, available time, wind and the mix of swimming, walking, villages and culture you actually want.

27 editorially reviewed places are currently published in the Chania region.

What makes a strong Chania day

West Crete rewards committing to a direction. Trying to force the north-west, Selino and Sfakia into one day usually produces more road than experience.

  • Kissamos and the west coast work as their own day; Balos, Falassarna and Elafonissi are not casual add-ons.
  • Paleochora, Sougia and the E4 coast follow another rhythm: longer access, but excellent combinations of coast, gorges and archaeology.
  • Sfakia and Apokoronas add hiking, villages and south-coast alternatives, but mountain roads, heat and the return drive belong in the plan from the start.
