Safety & access

Safety and access across Crete: what always takes priority on site

Signs, barriers, closures and local instructions on site always take precedence over a recommendation in a route plan.

Editorial route review — access, roads and local rules may change.

Known restrictions

Before you travel

Reviewed notices are available here without signing in. Official road closures are not yet comprehensively collected automatically. A working satellite feed does not cover flooding or road closures.

Roads and rental cars

  • • Some optional access roads are narrow, unpaved or have limited turning space
  • • Not every rental agreement permits driving on unpaved roads — check your own contract
  • • Driving times in a route are planning estimates, not guarantees
  • • Parking availability is never guaranteed

Foot access and coves

  • • Some approaches are rocky or uneven; suitable footwear can make a material difference
  • • Shade and services can be limited — carry enough water and sun protection
  • • Wind can change waves, visibility and swimming comfort quickly; a forecast is not a live safety assessment
  • • Quieter coves may have no lifeguard or rescue infrastructure

Abandoned structures and private property

Places involving abandoned or partially developed sites should only be viewed from areas that are publicly accessible or clearly permitted. Do not enter buildings, climb barriers or ignore signs.

Parts of such areas may be private or inhabited. Keep noise low and do not photograph residential spaces without permission.

Fishing

  • • Fish only where it is permitted and follow local rules and protected-area restrictions
  • • Keep a safe distance from swimmers, snorkellers and harbour operations
  • • The product makes no catch promise and does not certify whether a permit is required for a specific situation
  • • Take line, hooks and all rubbish back with you

Nature and cultural sites

  • • Stay on permitted access and do not remove or damage natural or archaeological material
  • • Ruins and informal paths can have uneven ground and loose stones
  • • Agricultural land is a working environment, not automatically a public viewpoint

For emergencies in Greece, the European emergency number is 112. CRETE UNSEEN is not a rescue or local-authority service and cannot guarantee the condition, permission or safety of an individual place.
