CRETE UNSEEN decision

How this place fits into a Crete day

Lykos and Finikas combine a coastal path west of Loutro with small coves, snorkelling and traces of Finikas's former harbour role. The E4-and-sea outing is most rewarding when you deliberately arrive on foot or by suitable boat. Driving straight in is not a sensible shortcut: regional guidance specifically discourages the rough track from Livaniana.

More about this place

Lykos and Finikas are two small coves west of Loutro that make most sense as one coastal outing. The E4 follows the shore, while suitable boat access may offer an alternative. Lykos is small and rocky, with interesting underwater terrain. Farther west lies Finikas, also called Phoenix: a more sheltered bay that once served as a harbour and is associated with purple dye made from murex shells.

The walk is part of the experience rather than merely a way to reach a beach. The coastal path has views of its own, and small tavernas and accommodation can be found in the wider area. The logistics are still very different from driving to a conventional beach resort.

Regional descriptions specifically discourage the rough track from Livaniana. Plan arrival via Loutro, then continue on foot or by a confirmed boat service. There is no car park at the destination. Strong seas may rule out boat travel, and swimming conditions need checking on the day.
