CRETE UNSEEN decision

How this place fits into a Crete day

Mochlos is a former fishing village, and To Bogazi is where you can still taste that: fish from the local fishermen, grilled or cooked the Cretan way, a long line of appetisers and salads from the local market – and the tables sit right above the water, facing the boats and the islet. The natural reason to turn a detour to Mochlos into a long lunch or an evening.

On the ground

More about this place

Mochlos sits in a quiet bay between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia, off the coast road, and Taverna To Bogazi stands in the middle of the village right on the water – the waterfront terrace looks onto the small fishing boats and across to the islet with its Minoan settlement.

The house is run by the family around Manolis and Gabi; the cooking uses their own olive oil, fresh local fish and meat, grilled or prepared the Cretan way. The fish comes from the village fishermen – farmed fish, the house says, is never on the menu, so what is available depends on the day's catch. Alongside there is a wide choice of appetisers and salads whose ingredients are bought at the local markets. Dishes mentioned include tuna carpaccio, grilled octopus and calamari. It is a seasonal business, open through the summer half of the year – check exact days and hours directly with the house.
