More about this place

Alatsolimni lies near Xerokampos on Crete’s southeastern edge. The Sitia Geopark describes a seasonal salt lake behind a sandy beach. Water accumulates in wetter months; during summer, the lake often dries and leaves a salt-covered surface. That change is part of the place, not a failed attraction.

In wetter periods the wetland provides habitat for birds, particularly around migration. No particular bird sighting can be promised. Binoculars, quiet observation and plenty of distance beat chasing a perfect flamingo photograph. Use permitted edges only; avoid dunes and delicate salt-marsh vegetation.

Keep the wetland separate from the open sea. If you want to swim, that decision concerns the publicly accessible beach and the conditions on that day, never the salt lake. This is not a swimming lagoon, an off-road driving ground or a verified fishing spot. The water level and timing of bird activity matter to your travel date.
