More about this place

The mansion at Etia near the Handras plateau is a distinctive reminder of Venetian eastern Crete. The regional heritage description records Renaissance ornament and a three-storey structure. Attribution to the De Mezzo family is considered likely on the evidence of its coat of arms, rather than conclusively established.

During Ottoman rule the building was reused and a bath was added. Conflict in 1821 and an earthquake in 1856 damaged the structure; it was protected as a monument in 1959. Those layers are the story here. It can complement the already documented village of Voila, while offering a different focus on architecture and changing uses.

Do not expect a furnished villa with guaranteed entry. Check which areas may be viewed, their structural condition and the permitted approach. Never enter unsafe rooms or cross property boundaries. It only works as a short cultural stop when viewing from permitted public land can be confirmed.
