CRETE UNSEEN decision

How this place fits into a Crete day

Choose Rethymno Old Town if you prefer discovering city history on foot rather than working through a checklist. Harbour, lanes and places to eat sit close together, so give the walk some room. If you have one particular Chania view in mind, though, these are two different towns — and worth keeping that way.

On the ground

More about this place

In Rethymno Old Town, centuries sit close together: Venetian buildings, later Ottoman traces, narrow lanes and the historic harbour. There is no need to collect façades at speed. The pleasure is that a walk through town can turn into a little history lesson almost by accident, with a meal that feels like part of the visit rather than a break from it.

Allow an hour or two for a first wander. If you like taking side streets, lingering by the harbour or staying over coffee, give yourself longer. Rethymno is not a stand-in for Chania: each has its own harbour and city history. If Chania is the city you specifically want to see, go there. If you want a walkable historic town with room to explore, Rethymno has its own reason to make the trip.

Explore the old-town core on foot. Drive to its edge, and check current parking and access rules as well as any event restrictions before setting off. That leaves you free to think about the next lane rather than where the car is allowed to be.
