How this place fits into a Crete day
Myli is remarkably green for a gorge so close to Rethymno. Streams, vegetation and the remains of the old mill village reveal a landscape once shaped by everyday work. It makes a walk with real history without requiring a major gorge day. If you complete the full traverse, however, plan the return or transfer.

More about this place
Myli feels almost suspiciously green for northern Crete. South of Rethymno, the gorge runs through dense vegetation past water, small cascades and the remains of the old mill village. The watermills are not decorative branding: grain from the surrounding area was once milled here, and a restored mill still helps make that history legible.
The useful part is the scale. Rethymno’s official tourism site lists a route of about 2.5 kilometres and an estimated duration of roughly one and a half hours. That makes Myli a real walking component without automatically taking over the whole day. It is also too substantial to reduce to “stretch your legs for ten minutes”. Do that and you mainly see the entrance rather than the reason the gorge works.
The practical catch is geographic. The entrance and exit are not the same place. The old village is reached only on foot, and a complete traverse needs a return or transfer plan. On a car-based day we therefore budget more generously than the pure walking time. An itinerary that leaves you very efficiently at the wrong end of a gorge is technically organised, just not particularly useful.
Myli fits travellers who want to combine nature, a little history and movement while staying within easy reach of Rethymno. If you want a dramatic high-mountain gorge, other routes deliver more scale. If you want shade, water, old mills and a manageable walk as a counterpoint to the coast, Myli makes a very good case for itself.
Before you set off
Getting there
The southern entrance lies below Chromonastiri and the official Rethymno guide places the exit near Xiro Chorio. The old village sits inside the gorge and is reached on foot only. If you walk through, plan the return or transfer as part of the visit.
Parking
Use only designated or clearly suitable parking at the chosen access point; capacity is not guaranteed. For a through-hike, remember that the car remains at the start.
