How this place fits into a Crete day
Karoumes puts the hike before the beach. Roughly 3.5 kilometres through Chochlakies Gorge lead to the remote coast in about an hour and a half. There is no road access or dependable infrastructure at the destination. Plan for the long return, heat and the trail's sensitivity to rain; choose it only if that gorge-and-sea outing is what you want.

More about this place
Karoumes is a beach you have to walk to. From Chochlakies, a route of roughly 3.5 kilometres leads through the gorge to the coast; allow about an hour and a half for the walk in. Anyone expecting a quick swim stop has probably not met the gorge yet.
There is no road access or dependable infrastructure at the coast. Carry water, account for the heat and plan the whole return before setting out. The gorge is not suitable after rain, and on very hot days the walk back deserves particular attention. The beach is waiting at the end. It will not organise your return transport.
The smaller Mavromouri cove lies farther away and requires additional distance. Reports of its more sheltered setting should not be assumed to apply to Karoumes. There is also no sufficiently confirmed separate arrival point for Mavromouri. If you intend to go there, independently confirm a reliable route rather than relying on a map pin alone.
Karoumes suits a day when the gorge and the sea belong to the same outing. If all you want is an easy swim, there are simpler options. If the walk itself is part of the reward, this is that kind of day.
