Hametoulo Gorge

A short, relatively easy gorge between Ziros and Xerokampos ending at a remote south-coast beach; heat, footing and the return still deserve attention.

CRETE UNSEEN decision

How this place fits into a Crete day

Hametoulo combines a relatively straightforward gorge walk of roughly three kilometres with the sea at the finish. The change from rocky trail to remote coastline is what makes the outing memorable. It is still a hike with return logistics to consider: stay on public paths, close livestock gates behind you and keep well clear of the military installation near the village.

On the ground

More about this place

Hametoulo follows a relatively straightforward, non-technical gorge for around three kilometres from the village area towards a remote stretch of south coast. Rock, trail and sea form one connected nature outing. Although it is shorter than Crete's major gorges, it is still a hike with a return to arrange, not a beach beside the car.

You may encounter livestock gates along the route. Open them only to pass through, and close them behind you. Military infrastructure near the village must be strictly avoided. Stay on the public hiking corridor; the military area is neither a viewpoint nor a suitable place to leave a vehicle.

Start early enough, allow for heat and water and confirm where a lawful arrival and return are possible. The quiet coastal setting at the end tells you nothing about actual swimming conditions. If you cannot arrange permitted access and a safe return, choose another walk.
