CRETE UNSEEN decision

How this place fits into a Crete day

Votomos Lake is the easy-going side of a day around Zaros: shade, spring water and a short lakeside walk feel like a welcome change after the sunlit Messara. Stop for a coffee by the water if you like. Longer Rouvas hikes start in the wider area, but they are a separate undertaking; the lake is not a swimming spot.

On the ground

More about this place

A few steps here reveal a different side of Crete. Just above Zaros, little Votomos Lake sits among trees on the southern slopes of Psiloritis. Spring water, shade and a quiet shoreline offer a change of pace after the sun-baked Messara plain.

Its present form has a story. Until 1987 the Votomos spring fed a small wetland; the Forestry Service then reshaped the area into today's landscaped lake. A gentle walk around the water is the simplest way to enjoy it. Lakeside cafés and tavernas can make this an unhurried break, although individual opening hours should be checked separately.

The lake is also a starting point for trails towards Agios Nikolaos and Rouvas Gorge. That does not make every route from the water a casual walk. The longer climb towards Rouvas Forest needs time, suitable shoes and a current assessment of heat and trail conditions. For a more compact visit, a lakeside circuit, the view and a pause by the water are enough.

Swimming and fishing are described as prohibited at the lake. Do not feed wildlife and respect the shoreline. Parking is available in the wider area, but spaces and access can change. Votomos is at its best when nobody tries to turn it into something it is not.

Good to know

Before you set off

Getting there

Approach by public road through Zaros. The independently mapped hiking car park west of the lake is about 460 m away in a straight line; follow the established walking route rather than crossing open terrain. Closer lake parking may be available but has not been reliably confirmed as a permanent parking option. Rouvas Gorge is a separate, more demanding hike.

Parking

The reusable driving point is the OSM-mapped 'Parking (to the Rouvas Gorge)' west of the lake, without a guarantee of available spaces or walk-through access. Check local signs. Other lakeside parking may be closer.
