How this place fits into a Crete day
Beyond Votomos Lake, Rouvas Gorge leads into a different landscape of mountain paths, forest and chapels. Depending on the verified route variant, a longer hike may connect the monastery of Agios Nikolaos, the hermitage of Agios Efthimios and the slopes towards Rouvas Forest. This is a proper hiking outing with climbing and a return to plan, not an effortless add-on to a lakeside walk. Follow the marked trail, not an apparent map shortcut.

Strong if you want
- • hiking

- • you only want a gentle circuit of Votomos Lake. Walking into Rouvas Gorge is a different undertaking, with more distance, elevation change and a return route.

More about this place
Votomos Lake is an easy pause; beyond it lies a very different experience on the green southern slopes of Psiloritis. The Rouvas trail heads from the Zaros area towards the monastery of Agios Nikolaos and, on longer or alternative sections, towards the hermitage of Agios Efthimios and Rouvas Forest. These landmarks belong to one walking landscape, not separate driving stops.
A shorter visit near the monastery can work independently. The full forest hike involves considerably more time and climbing. Published trail descriptions cover distinct variants; none guarantees that every waypoint can be reached in one fixed visit.
Do not infer a direct shortcut from a satellite map. Some lines between the lake and monastery are not through-walkable. Follow the actual marked path, verify closures, plan your return and allow for heat on exposed slopes. Carry water, wear suitable footwear and respect the religious sites.
Before you set off
Getting there
Use the independently mapped hiking car park west of Votomos Lake, then follow the actual marked path towards the monastery and gorge. Do not invent a direct lake shortcut or an unverified monastery vehicle approach; check the chosen variant and return.
Parking
The OSM-mapped hiking car park west of the lake is an identified starting point, not a guarantee of free spaces or direct access to every trail section.
