How this place fits into a Crete day
Pefki shows a greener side of eastern Crete: a gorge section of roughly two kilometres with vegetation, herbs and tall rock walls above Makry Gialos. It makes a refreshing alternative to a beach day, while the E4 can turn it into a longer hike. Your chosen trailhead determines the distance and return, so a short gorge is not automatically a short loop.

- • you are treating the short gorge length as the whole outing. Depending on your starting point, approach and return walks add more: two kilometres of gorge is not necessarily a two-kilometre trip.

More about this place
Pefki reveals a greener side of eastern Crete. Above Makry Gialos, a largely well-formed path runs through a gorge section of around two kilometres, with vegetation, herbs and tall rock walls. The greenery is particularly appealing in early spring against the area's otherwise drier landscape.
You can choose a suitable starting point around Pefki village or the Aspros Potamos/Makry Gialos area. Direction and any longer E4 connection change the distance, time needed and return logistics. The length of the gorge itself is therefore not a promise of a two-kilometre loop.
Pefki is a worthwhile nature stop when you deliberately want a walk instead of another beach. Check the exact trailhead and current path condition, wear suitable footwear and arrange your return. In summer, start early even if the gorge looks greener than the exposed coast.
