CRETE UNSEEN decision

How this place fits into a Crete day

Koutsounari Long Beach lets you choose between stretches of shore east of Ierapetra. Easy access, several entry points and plenty of space make it suitable for a short pause or a few hours by the sea. Its open southern exposure is the trade-off: wind and waves may matter more than the convenient drive.

More about this place

Koutsounari Long Beach, also known locally as Megali Paralia, is the opposite of a tiny photo cove. The beach runs for kilometres along the coast east of Ierapetra, which gives it something surprisingly useful: choice within the same place. Different sections offer more facilities or more open shore without requiring a completely different regional plan.

Access is straightforward. Several entry points sit along or close to the coastal road, a normal visit does not require off-road driving and the walk remains short. From Ierapetra and nearby holiday bases, that makes Koutsounari well suited to a swim stop that does not consume half the day simply getting there. Its length also gives you room to spread out, without turning that into a promise of an empty beach.

The main trade-off is in front of you rather than behind you: the open Libyan Sea. Southerly, south-easterly or south-westerly wave directions can change the feel considerably. “South coast” therefore does not automatically mean “calm water”, just as a long beach does not behave identically along every metre. Checking the actual wind and sea on the day is more useful than assuming three planned swimming hours will behave exactly as imagined.

We like Koutsounari precisely for this flexibility. It is not a dramatic secret weapon; it is a very useful beach when swimming, little access friction and a flexible stay length belong in the same day. If you want a small rocky snorkelling cove, other places have more character for that specific wish. If space and simplicity matter, Long Beach does its job very well.
