Mylonas Waterfall
A green trail to Mylonas Waterfall, often impressive in spring and sometimes completely dry in summer. The walk remains worthwhile, but flowing water is no year-round promise.

How this place fits into a Crete day
Mylonas is worth considering for its green hillside walk and dramatic rock setting above the south coast. After rain, water spilling over the cliff can be the moment you came for. In a dry summer the fall may shrink to a trickle or disappear entirely — Crete does not keep the tap running all year.
Choose the outing for the walk, not for a guaranteed waterfall photo. The actual trailhead and any unpaved vehicle approach still need confirmation before visiting, and the riverbed is no substitute for the marked path.

More about this place
Crete's waterfalls do not all keep flowing through summer. Mylonas sits above the south coast between Koutsounari and Ferma. The walking approach climbs into greener mountain terrain and partly follows an old water channel. When the catchment is wet, water can fall over a cliff of around 40 metres.
Winter and spring usually bring more water. In a dry summer, the waterfall may dwindle to a trickle or dry out completely. Anyone counting on a guaranteed cascade may be disappointed, but the trail and rock setting are part of the experience in their own right.
The higher trail approach is described as around 20 minutes each way, while routes starting near the coast are substantially longer. The last vehicle approach may be gravel and unsuitable for some rental cars. An exact, lawful driving and parking point for the upper trailhead has not been confirmed. Follow the signed path rather than the riverbed and take care on slippery rock.
Before you set off
Getting there
Follow the signed trail access from the Ierapetra–Makry Gialos road. Allow around 20 minutes each way on the upper trail; approaches from the coast take longer. Check the actual trailhead and your rental car’s rules before using an unpaved road. The waterfall itself is not a driving destination, and the riverbed is not the trail.
Parking
There is no confirmed parking spot for the trailhead. Follow the signed walking access and park only where permitted; allow for the walk from wherever you leave the car.
