CRETE UNSEEN decision

How this place fits into a Crete day

Kokkinos Pyrgos brings together a small harbour, beach cafés and a long stretch of shore that still feels like an everyday seaside village. It makes a relaxed sea stop near Tymbaki without automatically continuing to Matala. Westerly winds can change swimming conditions, and marked turtle nests must always be respected.

On the ground

More about this place

Kokkinos Pyrgos is a working seaside village rather than a staged resort. Its small harbour, cafés and the coast near Tymbaki belong to one relaxed setting. Organised sections around Katalyki offer facilities, while the shoreline changes character farther along. It is a pleasant sea stop without automatically joining the crowds in Matala.

This shore is exposed to westerly winds. In warmer months, loggerhead turtles also use parts of the beach for nesting. Keep away from marked nests and follow protection notices even where the sand otherwise looks open.

The neighbouring Tymbaki military airfield is not a visitor shortcut. Use legitimate public beach access only; the beach coordinate is not a verified car park.
