How this place fits into a Crete day
Kofinas belongs in a day that gives the mountain proper attention. Its meaning comes from landscape and religious history, not from collecting a quick summit marker on a map.
- Crowds
- usually quieter
Strong if you want
- • hiking
- • history
- • nature
- • views
Less suitable if
- • A viewpoint without a mountain ascent
- • Treating unresolved archaeological locations as one freely accessible stop
What can change the decision

Before you set off
Getting to Kofinas · Asterousia Peak
The map marks Kofinas summit. The described final ascent starts at Panagia Kera and is steep and exposed, requiring sure footing and a head for heights. Check the unpaved approach, permitted starting point and return separately.
Parking at Kofinas · Asterousia Peak
Use only locally permitted parking. Keep driveways, property entrances and sensitive natural ground clear; no parking space is guaranteed.
More about this place
Above the south coast, Kofinas rises as the highest summit of the Asterousia range. The landscape and the tradition surrounding the Feast of the Holy Cross make it more than a viewpoint. The regional description outlines an ascent from Panagia Kera chapel, approached on unpaved roads from Kapetaniana or Sternes.
The often-quoted short ascent time is not the duration of the whole outing. The drive, orientation, sure footing and return each need room in the plan. Choose a day with suitable visibility and enough daylight rather than adding the mountain to an already crowded coastal itinerary.
The archaeological interpretation calls for precision: publications differ in how they locate the summit and the investigated sanctuary areas. These are not being combined into one assumed visitor point. Finds or excavation traces are not an invitation to leave permitted paths.
