CRETE UNSEEN decision

How this place fits into a Crete day

Choose Biopetrino when the meal deserves a place in the day: Cretan cooking, a welcoming setting and a reason to linger in Asimi. If your Messara outing is all about collecting photo stops, keep moving. If you would rather leave room for a second plate, this is one to look into.

On the ground

More about this place

Not every great Crete memory needs a sea view. In Asimi, in the heart of the Messara, Biopetrino gives the food the leading role. This family-run taverna is praised for traditional Cretan cooking, generous portions and its stone-and-garden setting. You come here for the meal, not because you happened to have half an hour left between two sights.

What might be on the table? Guest accounts repeatedly mention olive oil, wine, vegetable dishes and traditional meat dishes. Vegetarian and vegan options are listed too. That gives different appetites something to work with, but it is not a promise of a particular dish on the day. If you have your heart set on something specific, ask the restaurant directly. The menu gets the final say, not a travel description.

Biopetrino makes sense when you are exploring the villages and landscapes of the Messara or travelling south of Heraklion. Instead of squeezing lunch somewhere between a beach and an archaeological site, you can make the meal part of the outing. If all you want is a quick coffee with a panoramic view, there are other places for that. Here, the better idea is to sit down, order at your own pace and stop thinking about the next car park before the first bite.

One thing does deserve attention before you set off: opening hours. Published listings do not agree. Check directly with the restaurant that it will be open at the time you want to visit, especially if you are making a detour. An appetite is excellent company on a road trip. It is not, unfortunately, proof that the kitchen is open.
