How this place fits into a Crete day
This much greenery so close to Heraklion is a surprise: plane trees, a riverside landscape and old watermills give the Astrakiano–Kounaviano system its character. Do not assume the full traverse is currently walkable; some sections are reported damaged or interrupted. Consider it only for a specifically checked, accessible section, not as a spontaneous standard hike.

More about this place
A short distance from Heraklion, the landscape turns unexpectedly green. The Astrakiano–Kounaviano gorge system forms part of the Giouchtas ecological-archaeological park, with plane trees, streams and old watermills offering a very different setting from the nearby coast. Spring is an especially appealing time for the greenery.
Unlike a straightforward gorge walk, the condition of the route is central to the decision. Parts of the longer Astrakiano traverse have been reported damaged or not continuously walkable. Do not plan the entire crossing as a confirmed trail. A visit should be considered only for a specific, previously checked public section, with a verified trailhead, current condition and return.
If you need a reliably continuous walk, choose another confirmed trail for now. A line on a map does not prove that this gorge can be walked end to end. Lawful driving access and parking at individual trailheads also remain to be confirmed.
Before you set off
Getting there
Do not assume the full Astrakiano traverse is continuously walkable. Choose only sections specifically confirmed as accessible, and verify trailhead, current path condition and return before visiting.
Parking
Access varies by section through surrounding villages; exact trailhead and parking logic still requires field verification.
