CRETE UNSEEN decision

How this place fits into a Crete day

Near Ano Asites, a comparatively short, green gorge brings together plane trees, springs and a chapel with a cave. It suits a nature walk near Heraklion without dedicating the entire day to hiking. Rain can make the streambed and stones much harder to negotiate, so check the current path even if planning a family outing.

On the ground

More about this place

Agios Antonios near Ano Asites reveals a greener side of Crete. The gorge is smaller than the island's long traverses and can fit into an ordinary travel day. The walk starts near the village and partly follows the E4. Springs, plane trees and protected flora and fauna shape the landscape. A cave near the chapel of Agios Antonios is home to protected bat species.

At around two kilometres with less than 200 metres of elevation change, the walk is manageable. Regional descriptions also identify it as suitable for families. That is not a promise for every travel day: rain can change the streambed, stones and water level. Proper footwear and a current trail check still matter.

You can allow time for a village or taverna stop around Ano Asites. One detail matters when searching for directions: this Agios Antonios Gorge is near Ano Asites in Heraklion, not the one at Patsos in Rethymno. Park only where permitted and do not assume a large visitor car park at the trailhead.
