How this place fits into a Crete day
The plateau entrance by the windmills is where you stop anyway – Seli Ambelou turns that pause into a proper meal: a family-run place with a wood-fired oven, vegetables from its own fields and a view across the plateau, rather than a viewpoint snack bar. Ideal as lunch on the way up or as the last stop before dropping back down to the coast.

More about this place
At Seli Ambelou, the drive onto the Lasithi Plateau comes with a natural pause. At roughly 910 metres, the pass opens onto the plain, framed by historic stone grain mills that the municipality describes as a particularly large concentration of windmills. The family restaurant of the same name stands here too, run, by its own account, by the third generation. The view is a good reason to stop. The meal deserves more time than a photograph.
The house describes traditional Cretan cooking, including wood-oven roast pork, goat in tomato sauce, gemista, hand-kneaded pasta and graviera saganaki. It also mentions vegetables from its own fields and its own olive oil. What is available on the day may vary, so ask ahead if you have a particular dish in mind. The terrace, garden and fireplace give the setting a different appeal across the seasons.
Seli Ambelou works for a meal on the way up to the plateau or before heading back to the coast. The restaurant states that its areas are step-free; if you depend on a particular accessible route, confirm the current arrangements directly. Check opening hours and table availability before making a special journey. The windmills will still be there. A free table is another matter.
