More about this place

Toplou, historically also known as Panagia Akrotiriani, is one of eastern Crete’s defining monasteries. Its fortified character grew out of a landscape shaped by centuries of pirate raids, Venetian and Ottoman rule and later resistance during the Second World War. Today the active monastery combines religious life with a museum of icons, ecclesiastical art and historical documents. The compact fortress-like plan, courtyard, bell tower and collections make it a strong cultural counterpoint to the open landscapes of Vai and Zakros.
