How this place fits into a Crete day
Kritsa adds village character and history to a day around Agios Nikolaos. Its paved lanes and old fountains are worth exploring on foot rather than through a windscreen. It is a lovely short shift inland, but the narrow historic streets are not a shortcut for driving onwards.

More about this place
Kritsa works best when a Mirabello day should be more than a sequence of coastal stops. The historic village above Agios Nikolaos brings stone-paved lanes, old fountains and a settled village fabric into the day — the kind of details that disappear rather efficiently when you only drive through.
The centre therefore belongs on foot. Normal road access is straightforward, but the narrow inner lanes are not a clever through-route for the car. Park at the edge or wherever local conditions sensibly allow and walk the rest. This is one of those places that actually improves at the exact moment the car stops being useful.
Kritsa suits travellers who want history, village character and some light movement without committing to a long hike. In midday heat the visit can sensibly stay compact; morning or later afternoon usually gives you more room to wander. Coastal stops or Lato can fit naturally into a wider Mirabello day, but there is no need to bolt them on merely to make the itinerary look fuller.
We recommend Kritsa not as a postcard promise of an “authentic village”, but as a real change of rhythm: step away from coast and road, spend some time walking through a historic settlement, then continue deliberately. That pause can add more to the day than one more viewpoint.
