Plan Xerokampos properly: why the south should not be overloaded

Xerokampos works best as a substantial afternoon stop. The approach is too slow to justify treating the area as a quick photo stop; 60–90 minutes by the water gives the drive a purpose and keeps the day from becoming fragmented.

Last reviewed:

Mazida Ammos near Xerokampos has pale sand, shallow water and a broad sense of space when conditions are calm. That makes it a poor twenty-minute stop: the place only starts to make sense when you give it time. Strong wind can change the water noticeably, so conditions still matter.

Xerokampos sits at the end of a slower road network. If you include it, pay for the distance with time at the coast rather than with extra rushing.

One good stop instead of three rushed ones

There are several beach sections around Xerokampos. Trying to sample all of them usually adds driving and parking without adding much experience.

Choose one strong section and give it proper time instead. That creates a calmer afternoon and makes the long approach worthwhile.

Make the return part of the day

Instead of treating the drive back as dead mileage, use the inland route as a different final chapter. A short cultural stop can work well in softer late light if enough time remains.

If you are running late, cut that optional final stop before shortening the main swim. The coast is the reason you came this far.

The approach is part of the experience

Xerokampos sits in the wide, dry landscape of the Sitia region and UNESCO Global Geopark. Mountains, bends, open ground and sudden sea views are part of what makes the far south-east feel different.

That is also the best timing clue. If the journey already demands attention, the reward at the end should not be a twenty-minute photo stop. Otherwise you have bought a great deal of road for surprisingly little Xerokampos.

Wind can turn the dream beach into a short stop

The open coastline is a large part of Mazida Ammos' appeal, and it also makes the area sensitive to stronger wind and rougher water. Blue sky alone does not tell you whether a long swim is the right plan.

If conditions do not fit, shorten the beach block or change the emphasis of the afternoon. Driving to two more open coves until the sea finally cooperates is rarely the best use of the day.

Bring what you would rather not spend the afternoon hunting for

Carry water, sun protection and the things you genuinely need for a long beach stop. Local services can be seasonal; a good day should not depend on one particular business being open.

The same applies to the return. Do not wait until everybody is tired and the fuel gauge becomes the most exciting feature in the car. A little preparation makes this remote corner much more relaxed.

Frequently asked questions

At least an hour is a sensible target. A shorter visit rarely justifies the slower approach unless Xerokampos is already close to your base.

The approach is slow rather than technically difficult on the main roads. Optional local access can include rougher or unpaved sections, so drive conservatively and check your rental terms.

If daylight and timing allow, use the inland return as the final part of the route rather than adding another beach. Keep any extra stop optional.
